RE: while we're on the subject of electricty FREE events...

Hi all

Many of you are interested and affected parties to Eskom’s two proposals, I wish to share the following with you.

  • Stanford Birding is a registered I&AP
  • Tourism is the greatest contributor SA’s GDP
  • Birding is the fastest growing form of International Tourism
  • SA Tourism against Eskom/Govt nuclear proposal 4 Pearly Beach
  • It seems apparent, the applicant in the case of the Nuclear Power Station, is Eskom backed by the current govt.
  • Therefore, by association, the applicant in the case of the transmission lines is also Eskom backed by the current govt.  The irony, in this case, is that it is the current govt., albeit a different department, i.e., is the one who has final approval. [Makes me feel like a prawn in a game of Chinese Checkers! ]
  • Everyone working at the PPP (Public Participation Process) is on the payroll for either Eskom or the Govt.

*Subject:* STANFORD PUBLIC MEETING on ESKOM POWER LINES

Hi everyone,

My observations of some of the points that were raised at the Stanford meeting of yesterday are as follows

    * On question of separate EIA’s for power station and power lines.

This appears to be a very sensitive point for Eskom and they could

not come up with acceptable answers except that the two projects

are handled independently by two different entities; power station

by Eskom Generation and the lines by Eskom Transmission. (These

are however two divisions or companies in the Eskom Group.) *This

is a point that we can further hammer them on* *during upcoming

      meetings.*

    * The question of the ABI alternative and community involvement in

identifying alternative routes _before_ any draft scoping report

can be put on the table. Arcus Gibb agreed that if we, as a

community, can come up with other alternative corridors that

should be considered we can do so. They also agreed that if we

write to them they will suggest to Eskom and the DEAT that enough

time is given to the community to do so. They said however that a

final answer would only be forthcoming by middle April. They

emphasized that the proposal must come from a broad based group

(probably involving ABI and all the various action groups

currently in the area) - I guess that this may be considered to be

a concession on their side but will only be of use if they give us

months rather than a few weeks to do so. Important to emphasize a

few points on this subject at upcoming meetings (1) *that we

should be given sufficient time* since we have asked for this

since August last year without receiving acceptable responses. (2)

That we require an *answer much sooner* than two weeks before the

current deadline for comments on the draft report. Ask why rush

into this thing since the building of a nuclear power station is

now a project which has no doubt been delayed by a number of years

      if not more.

    * At the Villiersdorp meeting there appears to have been a

misunderstanding. There is no decision to build three smaller

nuclear plants at all three sites. The purpose of the power

station EIA is still to identify the most suitable site for the

first power station. However if one site is chosen, it does not

mean that the other two will not be used in future since the

government’s current long term strategy calls for the construction

of at least three nuclear stations in the longer term, probably 20

      or more years.

    * NMA made the point that they engaged all the major strategic role

players in our community during the process so far. Following a

request they undertook to supply us with a list of all these

organizations with details about the meetings/workshops they had

      so far.

    * I think there is still confusion about the feasibility of running

all 6 the lines originating at the power station (the 4 to Kappa

and the 2 to Bacchus) in one corridor until they are out of the

Strandveld area. *Try to get clarity.*

    * The question of including the possibility of using of underground

lines in the Scoping study. It appears that it is only a matter of

economics. However the power station will cost about R300 billion

excluding power lines (reasonably accurate figure) while power

lines cost R1-2 million per kilometer (guess). Underground lines

are ten times more expensive (Eskom figure). If it takes 30 or 40

kilometers to get outside of the Strandveld/Agulhas plain area the

incremental cost of the entire project will increase by R800

million which represents only 0.3% of the cost of the entire

project. In the books of Eskom Transmission the R800 million will

off course be a much larger proportion of the cost of their

transmission line project. This is therefore another reason they

should adopt an integrated approach (power station and lines

together). *My suggestion is that we hammer them further on this

      issue at upcoming meetings.***

* *

There was a lot more points raised and anybody with further suggestions of matters to be raised at the upcoming meetings please circulate them (or send them to me and I will circulate them)

Nuclear Power Station news from Platbos Forest Newsletter

ESKOM is forging ahead with its plan to build a Nuclear Power Station on one of three locations in the country. Bantamsklip near Pearly Beach is one of the sites. This unspoilt area is regarded as the world´s "hottest of hot spots" in terms of its biodiversity and number of endemic species. Environmental Impact Assessments are currently underway for the transmission lines: 80 metres high, four pylons abreast, they are to occupy large corridors of the Overberg landscape. One of the proposed routes cuts directly over the canopy of Platbos Forest! I appeal to communities in the Overberg area to contact ESKOM and find out whether or not they will be affected by the development and to duly register as an Interested and Affected Party. There are still many landowners who remain uninformed about this looming threat.

You can register through NMA Effective Social Strategists: 011 447 9737 / email: theoh@nma.org.za. Shortly, we will post a link on our Global Warming Page which will provide updates, meetings, and environmental data around the proposed Bantamsklip Nuclear Power Station and its Transmission lines.

Oh Phillipa, I am dealing with my country's own environmental problems... this week I learned that local fishermen are harpooning dolphins and are using them for shark bites. I do research on wild dolphins and these findings are very disturbing. When I read your post, my first thought was that the planet needs lots of help! I need help to resolve this situation and I haven't figure out what to do...

RE: call on peace

Dear Colleen

Yes, I am very excited about getting my first group together.  My husband and I are currently negotiating with the owners of Oak Grove Farm about our future here.  There will be a few delays before I shall be in a position to confirm a date. I’m thinking late May/June…  I have only glanced at the documents thus far, but today printed the host one and will begin there.

I began this letter to you last year… before I even went to your website and requested to host your Apple Tree Groups.

Thank you for your continued email support throughout the year.  I trust you don’t mind that from time to time I share your wonderful words of wisdom on my blog.

I wish to share with you a little poem I spontaneously made up the night before last.

I wandered lonely as a cloud

inspired these words inside my mind

The poet in me is still beside

Yet churns the world where none may hide

It comes to me in moments like this

That all I need do is follow my bliss

My search for an answer was all that I wished

Yet changing the questions made You the plot miss

The Miss in my plot in the drama of life

Is quick with her wit but causes much strife

She smiles and she stretches

and balances with pride

The team in her corner’s

Not Little Jack Horner

In fact there are angels

Among us galore

I now challenge You and Your directional glare

To help me ensconce a patriotic snare

When we hold hands and sift out poisonous blots

We’ll end up quite clean of inconsiderate clots.

Please excuse the poetic licence when it comes to poetic syntax, but I didn’t want to try and make it better.

Subject: call on peace

Dear Philippa

Just as light is NOT the absence of darkness, but darkness is the absence of light - so too, peace is not the absence of fear, but fear is the absence of peace. Don't fight fear, but rather actively call on peace and bring it to your heart.

When there is no peace in your heart, then fear is there. Fear is empty. It is the empty space that is left when peace is evicted. When peace fills you, fear which is like a dark room, is now filled with light and you feel different. The fear is replaced by truth, which brings peace, but always.

When you are afraid, or feeling empty, when you feel in the dark - remember that fear is just emptiness, and emptiness is fear. They are like rooms in your heart that are empty of light. Take a deep breath. Embrace your fear or emptiness with compassion, and then call on Peace. Open to new ways of seeing your situation, open to new insights and a new experience. Call peace and feel it gently surround you like a warm blanket, to hold and comfort you. Call peace into your heart.

My wish for you at this time, as the year closes, is that you will learn to find this. It will be your greatest gift, first to yourself and then to all those you touch.

May peace be with you,

* Bipolar/Manic Depression <content.asp?id_Content=1024>
What is Bipolar Disorder/Manic Depression?
Bipolar Disorder/Manic Depression is a condition in which people swing
between marked depression on the one hand and mania or hypomania on the
other. Manic depressives who have mild symptoms, in that they do not have a
complete breakdown that leaves them incapable of coping outside hospital or
other supported living, can still be severely affected by the illness, but
the most severe form of manic depression carries the risk of breakdown which
can often lead to loss of job or home. A number of manic depressives also
show signs of schizophrenia and some psychiatrists speculate that the two
diagnoses are variants of the same disease.
Most people with manic depression spend the majority of their time either in
a normal mood or mildly depressed. Some do remain mildly high all the time
which makes assessing their mood very difficult.
What causes Bipolar Disorder/Manic Depression?
Many mood swings are caused by imbalances in blood sugar levels or by food
allergies. The most important nutrient for the brain is glucose- the fuel it
runs on and in order for our brains to work effectively we need a steady
supply of glucose. Any imbalance in the supply of glucose to the brain
results in a range of symptoms including fatigue, irritability, dizziness,
insomnia, excessive sweating (especially at night), poor concentration and
forgetfulness, excessive thirst, depression and crying spells, digestive
disturbances and blurred vision. People with elevated blood sugar levels may
become high, whereas low blood sugar is associated with depression
We predominantly produce glucose by breaking down carbohydrate foods and in
order to ensure that our brain gets a steady supply of glucose it is
important to avoid sugar and sugar containing foods as these cause a sudden
surge in blood sugar level and surge in energy followed by a drop as the
body attempts to rebalance .Blood sugar balance is also disrupted by too
much stress and stimulants, including cigarettes.
According to the nutritional pioneer Dr.Carl Pfeiffer, daily or weekly swings
in mood may also be triggered by stress or regular consumption of meals
containing ingredients that prompt an allergic reaction. Allergies can also
be triggered by seasonal changes. Inhalant allergies are common in the
spring with trees and grass pollen and in the autumn with weed pollens.

What you can do to improve the symptoms of Manic Depression
* Take Lithium
Lithium is one of the most successful drugs in psychiatry, usually
prescribed in the range of 300 to 1,200mg a day. Though some suffer from
significant side effects, for others it has caused a dramatic improvement in
their lives.

* Take fish oil supplements providing between 1.5 and 4g EPA
Omega 3 fish oils can be extremely helpful for those suffering from Manic
Depression. In double blind trials manic depressives taking the omega 3 fats
had a substantially longer period in remission than the placebo group and
the fish oil group performed better than the placebo group for nearly every
other symptom measured

* Increase your Magnesium intake by eating plenty of vegetables, fruit, nuts
and seeds and consider supplementing 200mg a day, found in good multivitamin
/ mineral formulas
Before the Second World War, magnesium was commonly used to stabilise mood.
Since the introduction of Lithium its use has faded, but interest in it has
been increasing rapidly. Since the amount recommended by the National Food
Council (RDA) is 300mg and diets provide around 200mg on average, most of us
are deficient in it. Symptoms of deficiency include muscle tremors or spasm,
muscle weakness, insomnia or nervousness, high blood pressure, irregular
heart beat, constipation, fits or convulsions, hyperactivity, depression,
confusion and lack of appetite
* Avoid Sugar, stimulants (coffee and tea), cigarettes and excessive stress
Since mood swings can be triggered by blood sugar imbalances, it is best to
avoid foods and other stimulants that dramatically influence blood sugar
levels
For optimal blood sugar levels eat wholefoods such as wholegrains, lentils,
nuts, seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables and combine protein foods with
carbohydrates by eating cereals and fruit with nuts and seeds and ensuring
you eat starch foods (potato, bread, pasta or rice) with fish, lentils,
beans or tofu
* Check yourself out for food allergies
The most common allergies are wheat, dairy products, oranges, eggs, other
grains apart from wheat, yeast containing foods, shellfish, nuts, soya and
members of the nightshade family - tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and
aubergine. Some people also develop allergies to tea and coffee. To test for
allergies, remove the suspected foods strictly for two weeks, then
reintroduce them in a controlled way, recording your symptoms. This is best
done under the guidance of a trained nutritionist which is doubly important
if you have ever had a severe reaction to food, such as asthma.
Alternatively it is possible to have a blood test using a method known as
ELISA which will tell you the foods that you are currently eating that cause
an IgG reaction and how severe that reaction is. Ideally it is best to have
an IgE ELISA test too.
* Supplement a good multivitamin and mineral every day, plus 1,000mg of
Vitamin C
While no specific nutrient has been proven to cause or cure manic
depression, there are many that can make a difference. For example many
manic depressives are short on Zinc and B6. Niacin (Vitamin B3) is a key
nutrient in mental health conditions and low levels of Vitamin C have been
linked with behavioural problems.
* Become more aware of what triggers your mood swings and how to control
your thoughts to improve your stability
Therapies that encourage self-observation and help to undo negative
behaviour patterns can be most helpful for those with manic depression.
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) aims to improve mood and behaviour by
investigating and challenging unhelpful thought patterns

David Ponedal gave us Sacred Water...

AUSTRALIA
December 2009
Parliament of the World's Religions
& the Outback Adventure
australia photo1

Led by Susan Hull Bostwick & David Ponedel

by David Ponedel

One of the great side bars of attending a Parliament of the World's
Religions is exploring the site where it is held. Unusual things are bound to
befall you.

When I was in Chicago, in 1993, I was going down from my room
to the main lobby, but there was a guard at the elevator. This was unusual, and
since nobody told me to leave I decided to see what was going to happen (always
a good idea at an event like this). A few moments later the Dali Lama walked by
laughing and waved to me.

During the Parliament in Cape Town,
South Africa, a group of us
went to the Cape of Good Hope to see where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic. While there I wanted to get some water, as I
have a water collection gathered at sacred sites from around the world. I was
down on the beach looking for a container when I saw a bird just a few feet
away. He looked at me, and I at him. I approached indirectly and he did not show
any fear of me, nor wanted anything from me. This simple scene affected me in a
way I had never experienced. I have had plenty of time in all types of
wilderness, and have seen plenty of wildlife, but for the first time as I stood
there looking out at the ocean I felt natural. We were just two beings together
in the world.

Intent ~ As I see it

When you really believe that God is crying on your shoulders...

The First Intent ~ Support Life I refrain from opposing or harming anyone. I allow others to have their own experiences. I see life in all things and honour it as if it were my own. I support life.

The Second Intent ~ Seek Truth I follow my inner compass and discard any beliefs that are no longer serving me. I go to the Source. I seek truth.

The Third Intent ~ Set Your Course I begin the creative process. I give direction to my life. I set my course.

The Fourth Intent ~ Simplify I let go so there is room for something better to come in. I intend that I am guided, guarded, protected, and lined up with the Highest Good at all times. I trust and remain open to receive from both expected and unexpected sources. I simplify.
The Fifth Intent ~ Stay Positive I see good, say good, and do good. I accept the gifts from all of my experiences. I am living in grace and gratitude. I stay positive.
The Sixth Intent ~ Synchronise After intending and surrendering I take action by following the opportunities that are presented to me. I am in the flow where Great Mystery and Miracles abide, fulfilling my desires and doing what I came here to do. I synchronize.

The Seventh Intent ~ Serve Others I practice love in action. I always have enough to spare and enough to share. I am available to help those who need it. I serve others.

The Eight Intent ~ Shine Your Light I am a magnificent being awakening to my highest potential. I express myself with joy, smiling easily and laughing often. I shine my light.

The Ninth Intent ~ Share Your Vision I create my ideal world by envisioning it and telling others about it. I share my vision.

The Tenth Intent ~ Synergise I see Humanity as One. I enjoy gathering with light-hearted people regularly. When we come together, we set the stage for Great Oneness to reveal itself. We synergise.
