FW: Emailing: What is Bipolar Disorder-Manic Depression

Hi Bruce, I just thought you could read this so that when next you are in
the grocery store you can keep in mind what foods will help my moods, which
in turn will help you lead a more peaceful life... :) I have highlighted
the nb bits so you don't have to read it all. Perhaps because of my
forgetfulness, you might consider assisting me in getting more of the right
foods in the right balance into my body?
Thanks, I love you!
Ooh, and what a body?

* Bipolar/Manic Depression <content.asp?id_Content=1024>
What is Bipolar Disorder/Manic Depression?
Bipolar Disorder/Manic Depression is a condition in which people swing
between marked depression on the one hand and mania or hypomania on the
other. Manic depressives who have mild symptoms, in that they do not have a
complete breakdown that leaves them incapable of coping outside hospital or
other supported living, can still be severely affected by the illness, but
the most severe form of manic depression carries the risk of breakdown which
can often lead to loss of job or home. A number of manic depressives also
show signs of schizophrenia and some psychiatrists speculate that the two
diagnoses are variants of the same disease.
Most people with manic depression spend the majority of their time either in
a normal mood or mildly depressed. Some do remain mildly high all the time
which makes assessing their mood very difficult.
What causes Bipolar Disorder/Manic Depression?
Many mood swings are caused by imbalances in blood sugar levels or by food
allergies. The most important nutrient for the brain is glucose- the fuel it
runs on and in order for our brains to work effectively we need a steady
supply of glucose. Any imbalance in the supply of glucose to the brain
results in a range of symptoms including fatigue, irritability, dizziness,
insomnia, excessive sweating (especially at night), poor concentration and
forgetfulness, excessive thirst, depression and crying spells, digestive
disturbances and blurred vision. People with elevated blood sugar levels may
become high, whereas low blood sugar is associated with depression
We predominantly produce glucose by breaking down carbohydrate foods and in
order to ensure that our brain gets a steady supply of glucose it is
important to avoid sugar and sugar containing foods as these cause a sudden
surge in blood sugar level and surge in energy followed by a drop as the
body attempts to rebalance .Blood sugar balance is also disrupted by too
much stress and stimulants, including cigarettes.
According to the nutritional pioneer Dr.Carl Pfeiffer, daily or weekly swings
in mood may also be triggered by stress or regular consumption of meals
containing ingredients that prompt an allergic reaction. Allergies can also
be triggered by seasonal changes. Inhalant allergies are common in the
spring with trees and grass pollen and in the autumn with weed pollens.

What you can do to improve the symptoms of Manic Depression
* Take Lithium
Lithium is one of the most successful drugs in psychiatry, usually
prescribed in the range of 300 to 1,200mg a day. Though some suffer from
significant side effects, for others it has caused a dramatic improvement in
their lives.

* Take fish oil supplements providing between 1.5 and 4g EPA
Omega 3 fish oils can be extremely helpful for those suffering from Manic
Depression. In double blind trials manic depressives taking the omega 3 fats
had a substantially longer period in remission than the placebo group and
the fish oil group performed better than the placebo group for nearly every
other symptom measured

* Increase your Magnesium intake by eating plenty of vegetables, fruit, nuts
and seeds and consider supplementing 200mg a day, found in good multivitamin
/ mineral formulas
Before the Second World War, magnesium was commonly used to stabilise mood.
Since the introduction of Lithium its use has faded, but interest in it has
been increasing rapidly. Since the amount recommended by the National Food
Council (RDA) is 300mg and diets provide around 200mg on average, most of us
are deficient in it. Symptoms of deficiency include muscle tremors or spasm,
muscle weakness, insomnia or nervousness, high blood pressure, irregular
heart beat, constipation, fits or convulsions, hyperactivity, depression,
confusion and lack of appetite
* Avoid Sugar, stimulants (coffee and tea), cigarettes and excessive stress
Since mood swings can be triggered by blood sugar imbalances, it is best to
avoid foods and other stimulants that dramatically influence blood sugar
levels
For optimal blood sugar levels eat wholefoods such as wholegrains, lentils,
nuts, seeds, fresh fruit and vegetables and combine protein foods with
carbohydrates by eating cereals and fruit with nuts and seeds and ensuring
you eat starch foods (potato, bread, pasta or rice) with fish, lentils,
beans or tofu
* Check yourself out for food allergies
The most common allergies are wheat, dairy products, oranges, eggs, other
grains apart from wheat, yeast containing foods, shellfish, nuts, soya and
members of the nightshade family - tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and
aubergine. Some people also develop allergies to tea and coffee. To test for
allergies, remove the suspected foods strictly for two weeks, then
reintroduce them in a controlled way, recording your symptoms. This is best
done under the guidance of a trained nutritionist which is doubly important
if you have ever had a severe reaction to food, such as asthma.
Alternatively it is possible to have a blood test using a method known as
ELISA which will tell you the foods that you are currently eating that cause
an IgG reaction and how severe that reaction is. Ideally it is best to have
an IgE ELISA test too.
* Supplement a good multivitamin and mineral every day, plus 1,000mg of
Vitamin C
While no specific nutrient has been proven to cause or cure manic
depression, there are many that can make a difference. For example many
manic depressives are short on Zinc and B6. Niacin (Vitamin B3) is a key
nutrient in mental health conditions and low levels of Vitamin C have been
linked with behavioural problems.
* Become more aware of what triggers your mood swings and how to control
your thoughts to improve your stability
Therapies that encourage self-observation and help to undo negative
behaviour patterns can be most helpful for those with manic depression.
Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) aims to improve mood and behaviour by
investigating and challenging unhelpful thought patterns

David Ponedal gave us Sacred Water...

AUSTRALIA
December 2009
Parliament of the World's Religions
& the Outback Adventure
australia photo1

Led by Susan Hull Bostwick & David Ponedel

by David Ponedel

One of the great side bars of attending a Parliament of the World's
Religions is exploring the site where it is held. Unusual things are bound to
befall you.

When I was in Chicago, in 1993, I was going down from my room
to the main lobby, but there was a guard at the elevator. This was unusual, and
since nobody told me to leave I decided to see what was going to happen (always
a good idea at an event like this). A few moments later the Dali Lama walked by
laughing and waved to me.

During the Parliament in Cape Town,
South Africa, a group of us
went to the Cape of Good Hope to see where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic. While there I wanted to get some water, as I
have a water collection gathered at sacred sites from around the world. I was
down on the beach looking for a container when I saw a bird just a few feet
away. He looked at me, and I at him. I approached indirectly and he did not show
any fear of me, nor wanted anything from me. This simple scene affected me in a
way I had never experienced. I have had plenty of time in all types of
wilderness, and have seen plenty of wildlife, but for the first time as I stood
there looking out at the ocean I felt natural. We were just two beings together
in the world.

The Fifth Intent ~ Stay Positive I see good, say good, and do good. I accept the gifts from all of my experiences. I am living in grace and gratitude. I stay positive.
The Sixth Intent ~ Synchronise After intending and surrendering I take action by following the opportunities that are presented to me. I am in the flow where Great Mystery and Miracles abide, fulfilling my desires and doing what I came here to do. I synchronize.

The Seventh Intent ~ Serve Others I practice love in action. I always have enough to spare and enough to share. I am available to help those who need it. I serve others.

The Eight Intent ~ Shine Your Light I am a magnificent being awakening to my highest potential. I express myself with joy, smiling easily and laughing often. I shine my light.

Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old)

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.  The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.  I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.  As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.  They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.  Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.

Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.  The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.  We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him.  What came out of his mouth next stunned me.  I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'  The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.   Persevere.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Love unconditionally and forgive frequently.

Empowering Your Journey

Dear Soulgroup Souls ~

We share a group consciousness. So when I draw the cards, I ask:
“Please give me what Soulgroup needs to know right now”

website: www.soulgroup.co.za

YOUR ANGEL CARD

~ POWER ~
“You now allow yourself to express your power.
Being powerful is safe for you, knowing that you express your power with love”

You have all the power of your Creator within you!

All the power of Divine love, wisdom, and intelligence is available to you. You have the spiritual power to tap into the universal wisdom of the One Mind. You have emotional power to empathise with others, and physical power that is truly unlimited.
The angels ask you to give them any fears you may have connected with being a powerful person. Your angels see a quiet and beautiful aspect of your true power, stemming from the only power in the universe: Divine Love.

Allow yourself to shine with this radiant love so that your true power can radiate out into the world in miraculous ways.

YOUR SOUL ORACLE CARD

Each card in this deck focuses on a specific aspect of your soul’s purpose, and addresses the particular soul lesson necessary to achieve that purpose. In this way we flush out and eliminate all obstacles to peace of mind and spiritual growth. Each card shows how to step away from the illusions of your ego and reconnect even more with your Divine Spirit.

~ BUST OUT OF YOUR COCOON ~
Shed the past and soar

Can you sense that one phase of your life is ending and a new one is beginning?

Do you feel that you’re on the verge of exciting new possibilities but aren’t sure where they’ll come from?

Does it seem that your life as you know it is crumbling before your eyes?

You aren’t imagining things, nor are you in danger. You’re simply breaking free from past karma and releasing your spirit to a greater tomorrow.

YOUR SOUL’S PURPOSE right now, like a butterfly finding its way out of its cocoon, is to shed the past and soar to new heights. You’re on the threshold of spreading your spiritual wings in brand new directions of understanding, and embracing your full potential. This is a very exciting time, and well worth preparing for.

YOUR SOUL’S LESSON:
Clear the decks and release what no longer attracts you.
Step away from things, situations, and people that bring you no joy or vitality, because you can’t reach out for something greater if you don’t first drop what’s in your hand. You’re entering spiritual adulthood, able to fully engage with life on your terms.

Change can be difficult, but don’t be afraid: even the butterfly as it emerges from the cocoon thinks that it is dying. All that’s ending is an old, stagnant self that no longer serves your spirit, so turn your fear into action.

Who are you today, and what do you want to experience right now? The answer is unfolding, and you’ll love what you discover. Nothing stands in your way.

YOUR ANIMAL CARD

~ COUGAR ~
Confidence
“Be bold and take charge”

You’re being called to take a role of leadership, and it’s natural for certain fears and considerations to surface, such as:

“Will I be seen as arrogant, bullying, or full of myself? Will others listen to me? Will I be challenged?”

Well, the truth is, these are all possible.

You just need to get over it, rise above these mind-made fears, and heed the call.

Whether you realise it or not, you’re a natural leader, and there’s no need to diminish the hard-earned skills you learned through life lessons just so you can play it safe. What you have to offer is needed right now, whether it is with your partner, your family, your community, or the larger world around you.

You will be judged. Count on it. And you need to hear these judgements, yet not allow them to rule you.

Don’t mistake ego-driven stubbornness and wilfulness for determination. Listen to the voice of your inner nature and the wisdom gathered from experience to guide your choices.

Acknowledge that everyone else has to make their own choices – including their response to you.

Remember that effective leaders are good listeners. They know when to follow and when to lead, and when to move forward and when to hold still.

ADDITIONAL INFO & ASSOCIATION CLARIFICATIONS
Cougar is associated with leadership and teaches decisiveness in the use of personal power.

Those with cougar medicine should pay attention to how their speech and their actions affect others. Make sure you are not speaking too sharply or holding on to something too tightly.

Cougar is a difficult totem to have because it continually places you in a position to be a target for the problems of others. Its power, strength and assertiveness are often misunderstood. You would be wise to listen to cougar and let it teach you how to balance intention, power and strength in everything you do.

Those with cougar medicine have past life connections relating to power and leadership. When the cougar selects you as its student be prepared for the ride of your life. It can shred you into little pieces (dissolve karma and identity) then put you back together again with a pure heart and purpose.

True leadership through gentle assertiveness is what cougar teaches.

YOUR MIND/BODY CARD

§ This deck is divided into 10 suits: Sadness, Anger, Fear, Love, Joy, Self-Esteem, Goals, Relationships, Society & Healthy Body

§ The deck works on the principle that our external environment reflects what’s going on in our emotions & thoughts, so each card deals with various thought patterns that are affecting our lives

Card drawn: Living in Society, Card 5

~ SELF EXPRESSION ~
Express your unique voice

The unhealthy thought pattern associated with this card:
“My voice can’t be heard.
What I have to offer doesn’t matter”

People who are scared of expressing themselves are usually afraid that they’ll be criticised, rejected, or embarrassed.

The truth is, it’s possible to have our ideas criticised and rejected if we speak our mind. However, if our relationships are loving and supportive, the people in our lives will still love and accept us even if they disagree with us.

It’s important to see that even if our point of view isn’t popular, our unique voice is skilfully expressed.

Your healthy thought to affirm:
“My unique voice is an authentic part of the life force that needs to be expressed”

How to change the world - Be yourself...

The email below, received this morning from Colleen, made me think of Pierre Martheze, who has just bought a brood mare from Argentina, in foal. I recently attracted a beautiful black crystal from there too. (Tourmaline? can't offhand remember the name).

Hello Philippa
How to change the world
It seems perfectly appropriate to be e-mailing you from Argentina when the topic for this week’s lesson is social and global transformation. In the words of a local, Argentina has been going through a silent civil war for decades and is suffering. No matter where I travel, it is clear that our countries are facing their own peak challenges right now. We can no longer separate ourselves from our world. What used to happen “over there” and “to them” is now “over here” and “to us”.
Our sense of family is expanding to include a much larger collective global family. Though cultures and languages may differ, we bleed the same, cry the same, laugh the same and need the same.

So as I sit here looking out of my hotel apartment in Buenos Aires, having struggled to speak to the few Spanish-speaking people I have just met, I am filled in awe once again that no matter where I go, when you learn to open the heart you will find family.

Given half a chance, if you offered most people the opportunity to change the world they would want to. Do you?

So the question is how? How do you make your life count towards a better world for us all?

Here are 3 real and deep truths that will help you to help your world.

1. Don’t look outside without also looking “in”.
When we look outside of ourselves at the world, we can feel overwhelmed at the sheer size of world problems. Because it all looks too big, we don’t believe that we can do anything of real value. We also go into a denial born of hopelessness, and then we close our eyes and hearts, to just focus on our own survival. We separate our hearts from “them” to try to feel safer.

TIPS:
a. Become aware of when you do this, and ask yourself to not let fear push you to close your eyes or your heart. b. Then go inside of yourself to build the peace and the strength to not shrink back from the world.c. Go inside with prayer or meditation to share the emotional burdens you carry with peace. Sharing the load is powerfully healing.

2. Don’t ask “What can 1 person really do?” Rather ask, “What can I be?”
There is simply too much for any 1 person to do. By focusing on what needs to be done you will feel inadequate and overwhelmed. Rather focus on being the person you were born to be, trust that when you do this, your presence will make the difference you were born to make. Ironically from this perspective you will also likely DO more for the world, but it will feel natural and based on inner peace rather than fear.

3. Your personal and spiritual growth is your greatest contribution to world healing.
Social transformation is a result of personal transformation. Because we are all connected, like drops in the ocean, know that:

• Your greatest contribution to world peace is inner peace. • Your greatest contribution to world healing is personal healing.• Your greatest contribution to global financial empowerment is personal financial empowerment.• Your greatest contribution to world spiritual awareness is a personal experience (not concept) of spirituality.

We make a difference. You make a difference. Just like science tells us that the flap of butterfly wings can change weather patterns on the other side of the world, your personal healing and growth can ripple to contribute to new futures and global healing.

On Psychic Matters by Dr Susan Hull Bostwick, USA

Very Right Rev. Dr. Susan Hull Bostwick, Executive Director of the Berkeley Psychic Institute; President, Church of Divine Man; Founder and Managing Editor of the Psychic Reader Newspaper

I love what I do–communicating, healing, and teaching people spirit to spirit. I am a teacher. I love introducing beginners to their own aura, chakras, and their personal psychic meditation space. It is no small task to keep the formula the same as it was originally intended to be and what has worked over the years. I love psychic kindergarten.

I see that meditation will become more of a lifestyle necessity, a way of going within for one’s own answers, yet calming the body, releasing stress, and self-healing. In 35 years, science will prove the amazing health benefits of using one’s psychic ability to its fullest. I see the East Bay becoming even more of a resource for seekers, a place where the spiritual quest does not end, but is empowered. Psychic reading and healing is on the rise. The children born today and those born in the past 30 years are seeing things, hearing things, and knowing things that they can actually clearly speak of and that was not happening before. Being labeled psychic will become normal in 35 years. The New Age child needs, more than ever, protection in the sense of being taught psychic tools. I see more schools such as Yin Yang School for Psychic Children, which I started in 1979, where students are validated for their clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience.

Every morning I arise and assess my spiritual bubble and perform a ritual of setting the energy for my day: this involves seeing the color, vibration, intent, goals, and mock-ups–or energy wishes–that I have going for me this day. I validate and bless all aspects of my life: spiritual, personal, and career. It is kind of like asking for what you want and getting it. If I want the Church of Divine Man or the Berkeley Psychic Institute to take a big step in a specific direction, according to my vision of the future, I imagine it right now. This imagining process–meditation–is what inspires me and brings me to the realization that I can accomplish anything.

How to Create Space Internally to Hear the Divine

by Heather Ash Amara

When you clear your mind, express your emotions, and cleanse your physical body, you release what you are not. You create space for the Divine to enter and remind you who you are. The more space you have internally the easier it is to listen and tap into Spirit's wisdom and clarity.

When I worked with don Miguel Ruiz (author of The Four Agreements) our Toltec community did a physical cleanse once a year for Lent (40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter). This was always a sacred time for me, and a time of huge growth.

This year at Spiritual Integrity, Raven and I are starting a new tradition by setting intent for community cleansing from Candlemas (also known as Imbolc) on February 2nd to the Spring Equinox (also known as Eostar) on March 19th. Candlemas is a cross-quarter day that marks the midpoint between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, and is a time of taking stock. For our ancestors who lived by the cycles of the land Candlemas was a time to feel into how much longer the winter was going to be, and how much grain and provisions needed to be saved to get through the final stretch.

The light is returning, but we are still in winter, waiting for the shoots and buds of spring to appear. We can use this time of year to gently release what no longer serves us and gather our energy and focus as we prepare for a rebirth at Spring Equinox. We invite any of you readers to take on a cleansing period as well.

There are many ways to work with the energy of this time of year to create space and healing.

The focus is to lovingly break up old routines and remove distractions that keep you separated from Spirit. You can choose a focus for yourself, and make sure that you choose from your heart and desire for more space for Spirit, rather than a subtle punishment or creation out of frustration, judgment, or self-punishment. This commitment is to yourself and is a prayer and offering, a sacred gift to clean your temple to receive more of the gracious presence of the Divine in your being.

Here are some ideas for cleansing in the three areas of your life: mental, emotional, and physical. When you choose one, or brainstorm other ideas, choose a solid focus that takes into account where you are on your path. Challenge, but don't overload yourself.

Mental Cleanse
* Opinion fast

Refrain from sharing any opinion you have with others. This is especially useful for controllers. Start by defining what is an opinion, and have a focus for what you are going to do instead of sharing your opinion. Where you are moving towards is not even having the opinion arise in your mind.

* SilencePartial or Full Silence:

Pick one day a week to be in silence, or go into silence for a longer period of time. It is possible to continue to work and interact in silence; it just takes creativity. Read more about my 40 days of silence online in Spiritual Integrity's articles section.

* Mindfulness practice

Pick a place where you tend to go unconscious and create a mindfulness practice, such as saying a prayer before eating and giving your food your full attention, staying conscious of your breath throughout the day, or sitting quietly instead of reading or watching TV.

Emotional Cleanse
* Repression fast

If you tend to bottle up your emotions this is a good cleanse to take on. The fast is from any type of repression of your emotions, which means you consciously express any emotions that arise in the moment. You might dance, vocalize, or beat on pillows. This does not mean "going off on" other people and venting your emotions; it means allowing your own energy to move, in a way that is safe for you and those around you.

* Expression fast

On the other hand, if you tend to cycle emotions or stories, getting caught in emotional drama, then choose an expression fast. This cleanse invites you to pick one emotion or feeling state (e.g., anger, fear, being a victim) and consciously choose not to express it. You will need to give yourself a focus for what you will do instead of expressing that emotion or story.

* Distraction fast

Pick your favorite distraction (TV, video games, alcohol, looking in the mirror) and stop doing it. Choose what you will replace it with, i.e. what you will do instead with all that time.

Physical Cleanse
* Refrain

Pick one food and stop eating it. Practice staying open hearted and soft around the item, not closing to it. For example: if you pick chocolate, after a week or so put yourself around chocolate or people eating chocolate and watch what arises when you refrain. Be curious about its purpose and effects in your life.

* Partial Diet Cleanse

Choose a category of food to refrain from: sugar, bread, coffee, etc. See notes above for staying open hearted.

* Full Internal Cleanse

Commit to a thorough cleansing program and stick to it. We recommend Arise and Shine, which is the best cleansing program we have found. For this cleanse you first need to get your body alkalized. For any full cleanse make sure you start slow so the detoxification process is gentle. Educate yourself first.

All of these cleanses, from mental to emotional to physical, are interwoven. When you do a mental cleanse, emotions may arise and you will have the opportunity to cleanse your emotional body. When you do a physical cleanse you will get to find loving discipline with your mind. Whichever cleanse you choose, from the most simple to the most challenging, be conscious about how you set it into motion. Identify the length of time you will do it, and plan a ceremony to initiate yourself into your commitment.

Be impeccable with your word: Watch how you think and talk about your cleanse. Remember it is a joy to make more space, not a chore.
